REHABILITATION UNIT

Introduction
The new rehabilitation unit was established in the Lantoro Annex on I 2th Septenmk
nber,
2002. This was as a result of the huge burden on the hospital of the chronic, lone e
stay
psychiatric patients, who have been in the hospital for many years. These patient.
have lost their primary support, leading to vagrancy/ abandonment in the hospital
apart from those on legal restrictions because they are mentally abnormal offenders
Aims of the Rehabilitation Unit
To prevent or reduce physical and environmental handicaps among long stay
patients.
To minimize the burden on careers of mentally ill patient.
To get our long stay patients out of hospital through a carefully planned and
implemented re-integration process.
To train specialist staff for rehabilitation services.
To ultimately establish a comprehensive psychiatric rehabilitation service
network with both hospital and community based vocational and residential
facilities.
