The School is the first and foremost School of Psychiatric Nursing in Nigeria and
Africa, South of the Sahara. It has trained and graduated qualified and licensed
Psychiatric Nursing experts not only for the entire regions, zones and states of the
federation on Federal Character Principles; it has equally done so for virtually all the
Anglophone States of West, Central as well as the East African States.
The School is a Federal Government Institution belonging to the Federal Ministry of
Health, while its training mandate is controlled and regulated by the Nursing and
Midwifery Council of Nigeria as stipulated by law. The established tutorial staff capacity
of the School stands at 24. However, the mental health nurses brain-drain to greener
pastures in foreign countries has attritionalized the figure to just 10 who are
academically and professionally qualified. Most of the Tutors possess Masters Degree
while some are pursuing Doctorate Degree Programmes. In addition to these high
